- The 1992 memorandum of agreement between the two sides stated that "positions in the library which are equivalent to positions in the city of Victoria shall be compared for the purposes of job evaluation and pay equity." (Quote from the Times Colonist article) Seems pretty clear. If not, why is the Library Board's Negotiator, the Greater Victoria Labour Relations Association (GVLRA) unwilling to have the dispute arbitrated?
- The Times Colonist says "Fines for overdue materials represent between $500,000 and $600,000 of the library budget." What percent of this is the total budget? This enormous sum represents at least $2.00 for every child and adult in the GVPL area. What were the actual totals for the past few years?
- Is the GVLRA interested in settling this dispute? There must be some motive for refusing binding arbitration.
We'll try to get some answers and more details. Keep posted, vote if you haven't already, and give us some feedback by posting comments, or email us at It's Our Library.

I voted from a tiny run down library in Nassau--in a fomer jail. We are SO lucky to enjoy such wonderful libraries in Victoria and I think March 25 is WAY TOO LATE for a protest. We need the premier to appoint an arbitrator NOW.

I just sent off an email to Joe Easingwood about a guest he had on his radio show this morning making asinine comments about libraries being not necessary since not one uses them blah, blah, blah. My husband called me down to hear it, knowing it would rile me. Most people I know use the library regularly. I also said that the reason they haven’t heard very much fuss from library patrons is because they are reading not listening to pop culture radio.

Thank you so much for this. At a book club meeting tonight we tried to plot a route leading to exactly where the Ad Hoc It’s Our Library Team is leading. I am busy spreading the word. Good for you!
